Best And Wisest Mom

My Mom is the strongest, most giving woman I know. She is a farmers daughter, a farmers wife and a farm mom too.

The past year and a half have not been easy for her, but with God's guidance she has continued to be strong. She has come face-to-face with a stroke, infections, a mild heart attack, bypass surgery, the loss of  her right leg, colon cancer, and the loss of my dad, her farmer husband.

Through all this, our mother-daughter roles have become somewhat reversed. It is now time for her to do the receiving, and not all the giving. But no matter what our family does for mom, we can never repay her for what she gave all of us. Thank you God, for my strong, giving Mom.

Best and Wisest Mom
By Joanna Fuchs
Mom, I wish I had words to tell
How much you mean to me.
I am the person I am today,
Because you let me be.
 Your unconditional love
Made me happy, strong, secure.
Your teaching and example
Made me confident, mature.
In all the world, there is no mother
Better than my own.
You're the best and wisest person, Mom
I have ever known.

Happy Mother's Day!

Now I know you're thinking, "OK, I understand why Jan posted the Mother's Day stories since the theme is Celebrations, but why the post about waiting to plant"? Believe me if you are a farmer, Spring and beginning to plant our crops is definitely a celebration!

Not Your Typical Mother's Day

Since our career is not a "typical" 9-5 job, why should we expect our holidays to be "typical"? Mother's Day is no exception. Whether it be a holiday or just any old day, we are committed to taking care of our animals. And we are o.k. with that. We knew about this commitment when we signed on to this somewhat crazy journey called farming.

So what is our holiday tradition to celebrate Mother's Day? Chores, church, and family lunch; usually with a few twists along the way. I remember Mother's Days that began with a visit from the veterinarian because a new momma cow was having difficulty bringing her newborn calf into the world. I remember times when we missed church on Mom's Day because the Spring weather did not cooperate and the corn seeds were desperately in need of being planted. Other years Farmer John worked in the fields while the kiddos and I went to church and then brought slightly cold fast food to the field, spread a blanket on the edge of that newly plowed field and enjoyed our gourmet feast for Mother's Day. But I'm o.k. with that. Being with family is what matters to this mom...and I enjoy a few twists along the way!

Happy Mother's Day!

Shared Celebrations

I'm sure you have heard the saying, "the more the merrier." That seems to be the theme for this weekend. Let me explain.

Saturday morning, Farmer John, daughter Sara and I headed south to Winona, Minnesota for Sara's graduation ceremony where she received her Master's degree in Literacy Education. John and I are so proud of her for striving to be the best English teacher she can be. Her 8th graders are lucky to have her!

Thanks God, for such an amazing daughter!
Saturday evening spaghetti, french bread, and fresh baked cookies, complete with cute chicken-patterned plates and napkins were delivered to my mom (and dad) for Mother's Day. What mom doesn't want a night off from cooking?

Thanks God, for such a great mom!
Oh yeah, did I mention it's my birthday too? Three celebrations in one day? Why not!

Thanks God, for my 29th...39th... Thanks God for another happy birthday!
Sunday brings another birthday as we celebrate the one year anniversary of the birth of My Barnyard View. My blog is growing from infant to toddler. I'm such a proud mama! Your comments, encouragement and questions is what keeps this adventure moving along.

Thanks God, for my wonderful blog readers!
Since the theme of this weekend is "the more the merrier" I hope you will help me celebrate with a piece of Dairyman's Very Chocolate Cake. And a glass of milk, of course!

Now I've gotta run. We are celebrating Mother's Day with John's mom and grandma. Whew! All this partying can be exhausting. But I wouldn't change a thing.

Mother's Day Thoughts

"Were you born in a barn?"  "Chew with your mouth closed. You look like a cow chewing her cud!"  "No use crying over spilt milk." These are some of the words of wisdom my mom shared with me as I was growing up. These pearls of wisdom all seemed to have a "rural" flavor, which seemed appropriate coming from my mom who lived on a farm most of her life. Where does she come up with this stuff?
Now fast-forward to 2002. My son Michael presented me with a Mothers Day gift, Momisms by Cathy Hamilton. I see my Mom's words-to-live-by, right before my eyes. It was then that I realized that all Mom's eventually speak the same language. " I hope someday you have children just like you." " Don't talk with your mouth full." And, "Always wear clean underwear, in case you get in an accident."
" You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your relatives." Not to worry Mom. I would have picked you anyway, Momisms, and all. Love you, Mom!
