OUR COWS

Bremer Farms is home to 130 milking cows and another 100 head of young cattle. We have Holstein cows which are the black and white ones. We also have some red and white Holsteins. Holsteins are the most common breed in the United States because they produce the most milk. Cows weigh about 1,500 pounds and stand about 58 inches tall.

Our cows are milked twice daily in a parlor that can accommodate milking 16 cows at one time. Holsteins produce 7-9 gallons of milk per day.

They are housed in a free-stall barn, which allows the cows to move around freely to eat, drink, rest, and go outside whenever they like. The barn is spacious and well-ventilated and includes fans and a sprinkler system for the warmer months. It lets in air and sunshine and also provides shade and protection from the wind, cold, rain and snow.

Cows eat and drink a lot! Each day, each of our cows eat about 100 pounds of food and drink about a bathtub full of water! Our cows have access to a mixture of home-grown forages that are available anytime they choose to eat. We believe wholeheartedly that cows need to be kept healthy and comfortable so that they can produce quality milk for us all to enjoy.
