60 Years Of Princess Kay! And A Giveaway Too!

Most people lament the end of summer, but for the 12 Princess Kay of the Milky Way candidates preparing for judging and coronation on the eve of the Minnesota State Fair each year - it's something they've been looking forward to their entire lives.

Princess Kay of the Milky Way serves as the official goodwill ambassador for Minnesota's nearly 4,000 dairy farmers. To learn how these lucky ladies have been chosen to possibly become our next Princess Kay, you can visit Who's Number 60? 2013 commemorates the crowning of the 60th woman to wear the crown. This year's Princess Kay of the Milky Way coronation ceremony begins at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21, at the State Fair Band Shell (1302 Cooper Street) and it's free to attend!

Who's Number 60?

Christine Reitsma, 59th Princess Kay of the Milky Way 2012-2013

This year the Princess Kay of the Milky Way title marks its 60th anniversary. Dozens of dairy princesses from across Minnesota are gathered at the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota, May 17-19 to participate in workshops and judging.  At the weekend’s conclusion, the Princess Kay of the Milky Way finalists will be announced. 

Dairy princesses are young women who are from dairy farm families or are involved in the dairy industry through their employment or that of their parents.  They make appearances in classrooms, at parades and community events, and county fairs.  Princess Kay finalists have their likeness carved in butter during the Minnesota State Fair and make public appearances during the Fair’s 12-day run.

Princess Kay candidates are judged on a written application, a short speech, a professional interview and a simulated media interview. The 12 finalists are named May 19.  Live updates of the finalist announcements will be posted to Princess Kay’s Facebook page during the luncheon. On Twitter, updates can be obtained by following the hashtag #MNPrincessKay.

Princess Kay is then crowned the night before the Minnesota State Fair opens and serves as the dairy industry’s goodwill ambassador for a year, helping people understand the dedication of dairy farmers to wholesome and nutritious food, and the way milk is produced. Dairy farmers sponsor the dairy princess program through Midwest Dairy Association.

Hannah Holstein Goes To The Fair

My A-Fair with fairs (see August 11, 2012 post) kicks into high gear this week as the Minnesota State Fair opens. For the next 12 days our family will make many trips to the Great Minnesota Get-together! Living only 20 minutes from the "A-Fair to Remember" allows us to visit often, and we take full advantage of every opportunity. I hope you can join us on our travels and adventures to the fair through My Barnyard View.

Sara and I often visit the Fair on opening day, but this year we brought along another Bremer Farm resident who has been begging to see what all the excitement is about. Hannah Holstein will be joining us on our fair visits, and since she is not camera-shy, you will see her in my photos. What a ham!
