G Is For Games

It's June Dairy Month! The barn doors are open,
so join me on my daily A to Z journey
to learn more about dairy.

  G is for Games
Meet our daughter Sara, today's guest blogger.

I work full time as a teacher in my hometown; and, when I’m not in the classroom I’m in the barn either milking or feeding my cows. I was a Princess Kay of the Milky Way finalist in 2005 and have been explaining dairy to those willing to listen ever since.
If I’m not in the barn, I’m usually in my front yard reading a book or watching the golfers on the golf course that surrounds our family’s farm. Being so close to the metro, we are surrounded by things that typical farms don’t have in their neighborhood. I also have an affinity for decorating our front yard and farm with various light displays for the next big holiday.

8th Grade Language Arts teacher by day,
and calf feeder and cow milker by night.

Growing up Mike and I always had our respective farm chores.  When we got done with our jobs, we would then bask in the freedom of knowing that now we could do whatever we wanted.  Mike and I recently had a conversation that we often tended to get right back to farming during our free time.   Mike and I ended up pooling our money together as children to buy a Nintendo 64.  As time went on our game collection grew.  The game that by far accumulated the most hours from me was called Harvest Moon 64.  In this game, it was my responsibility to restore a farm that had fallen into disrepair after a relative passed away.  Of course, I rebuilt a very successful dairy operation.  I like to think that my real-world knowledge carried into this digital realm.

A view inside the Harvest Moon dairy barn.
My love of farm games didn't end there.  When I went away to college, I ended up doing some computer gaming because I didn't have my console as easily accessible.  That's when I started playing John Deere's American Farmer.  Once again, I poured hours into building a successful dairy farm.  I was able to build up my farm to a level where I was hiring employees and became reputable in the breeding circuit.  It was an amazing farm, until my computer crashed...

Each cow's health could be monitored to make sure you were the best caregiver you could be.
As time went on the craze of Farmville came and went along with many other games housed in the world of Facebook.  I started to drift away when the reality of farming, in the gaming world, started to disappear.  I guess I'm more interested in authentic game play.  The idea of pink cows giving me strawberry milk bothered me.  There are so many people who ask or joke about brown cows giving chocolate milk, I guess I just didn't want to deal with it while playing online.
This cows does NOT give strawberry milk, nor does it exist in real life.
My brother and I will always have something in us that is drawn to farming.  I mean come on, we are willing to "fake farm" in video games.  It says a lot about the passion we have for farming that we don't even take a break from it when we have free time.  Just this morning while getting ready to go out to the barn Mike told me that in the new Mario Kart 8 game there is a track called Moo Moo Meadows.  Guess what we'll be doing after milking tonight!
